This blog is to help us ponder truth as we share our insights and inspirements throughout the week.
Each week will start with a question. You are asked to ponder it, discuss it with your family, and seek evidence for the answer in any of your studies that week. Post your inspirements too!

The Point

Some synonyms of the word "focus" are "point," "center," and "concentration."
One of the definitions for "point" as given in Webster's 1828 Dictionary follows:

Aim; purpose; thing to be reached or accomplished; as, to gain one's point

This definition was very interesting to me. I never really thought of focus necessarily as purpose, but rather as momentary concentration. However, this definition of "point" (which is also a definition of "focus") gives very deep insight on how significant focus really is in our lives.
  • What is the point (or focus) of life?
  • Why are we here?
  • What should be our main concentration in this life?
  • How do our momentary concentrations affect our main concentration?
For me, everything goes back to Moses 1:39, because that is the purpose of life:

For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

The reason we are here is to accomplish God's work on Earth, because people on Earth (His children) are the ones that make accomplishments on Earth. God works His work through us. However, this work can't be accomplished without Christ. No man on this Earth would be able to attain immortality or eternal life without Christ. Therefore, our work is to bring God's children to Christ.

If the whole reason we are here is to bring people to Christ, then where should our focus be? Our main concentration in this life should be to bring men to Christ, but this is not the main concentration of many of us. Where is our main concentration? Is it money? Is it fame? Is it the glory of men? Is our main focus to bring ourselves higher than the next person? For many people, the answer is yes. It shouldn't be. If your focus is money or fame or fortune, you will never reach your goal. However, if your focus is on God and His work, you will be able to accomplish and fulfill your purpose through Christ.

So how can we ensure that our focus is in the right place? How can we make sure that our aim or purpose is right? What define your main concentration in life are your momentary concentrations. By small and simple things are great things brought to pass. What are you focused on right now? Will that allow you to fulfill your purpose in life?

That is the significance of focus. Our small focuses define our main focus. In order to right your main focus, you have to right your small focuses. So next time you are involved in something, think about it. Is this momentary focus in line with your main focus? If not, quit it. :)

  1. Life is like a circle with lots of little colored dots in the circle. The dots represent all the things we are doing in our life's. In the exact center of the circle is one black dot, our focus, our point, our center. The colorful dots can be very important, however we should not make them our focus. :D Thanks for sharing!

    2. I enjoy the path you take me on when you right and the truths you help me discover. This was really cool! I wonder how we can keep that question in our minds consistently.

  4. I think one way of keeping my thoughts Christ Centered (though I'm far from perfect at doing it) is by keeping my heart Service Centered. Jefferey R. Holland said 'And if you love them today, maybe you can teach them tomorrow.' I think that small and simple things should all be focused on love and service.

Thanks for the thoughts, Pack! It's super mind boggling to think about all this. :)

  5. I really liked where you said, "What define your main concentration in life are your momentary concentrations. By small and simple things are great things brought to pass." It really made me think. I kinda talked about that concept in my decide word study. That every choice (everything we focus on) builds up throughout our lives. At the end of the day, we will be judged by that.

Anyway, it really made me think. I'm trying to figure out what little things I'm focusing on that are distracting me from what I should be doing. Thanks for saying that in such a meaningful way!
