This blog is to help us ponder truth as we share our insights and inspirements throughout the week.
Each week will start with a question. You are asked to ponder it, discuss it with your family, and seek evidence for the answer in any of your studies that week. Post your inspirements too!

Charity

"Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear nor ignorance." -Francis of Assisi

Charity is not of the natural man. The only thing fear and ignorance have to do with charity is they are the opposite. Charity is the pure love of Christ, but it is also more. For "charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things."1

Charity is light, hope, endurance. Can we have complete, pure charity while in this earthly state? Isn't charity a gift? If we are pursuing charity, praying, fasting and truly seeking for charity, can't God bless us with it? Isn't that the only way to have it, because I believe we can't really develop it on our own. "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail." 2

In this scripture we are told to 'cleave unto charity' we are told to 'hold fast to the iron rod.' What is the difference between cleaving and holding fast?
  1. Cleave: To stick; to hold to. To unite or be united closely in interest or affection
  2. Hold fast: To stop; to confine; to restrain from escape; to keep fast; to retain. To connect; to keep from separation.
We are to hold to charity, to stick to charity. To be united with charity, to be one with charity. :)  Charity is not an easy thing, but we are commanded to have it. Is it important? Well, "charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him." I think that its worth it.

Cleave to it
Hope, light, endurance
And it shall be well with him
Rejoiced in the truth
Isn't it a gift?
To endure to the end
Ye must have charity, for all things must fail.

Here is my word study: Charity

  1. I love how you in your word study said "Charity is pain" and then now "it will be worth it"
    It totally will be!
    This is awesome!

  2. Ooo! Great thoughts! I agree...I think a big part of charity means to be willing to suffer for the right cause, but if we hold fast, we know it really will be worth it.

  3. Interesting - the difference between "hold fast" and "cleave". I noticed before how those in Lehi's dream that did "cleave" unto the iron rod, fell away when they reached the tree and those how did "hold fast" stayed faithful... But we are to "cleave" unto charity. Maybe when we "cleave" to the word of God, we forget that it is there to teach us to love on another? Anyway, that's pretty neat how you differentiated the two.
