Questions for October Week 2

Questions to ponder and discuss with your family this week:

  • What does learning about people like Harriet Tubman and those who helped with the Underground Railroad teach you about what you need to do to accomplish God's work for you at this time?
  • What does your word study on "heart" have to do with freedom and bondage?

Comment and share some of your thoughts or questions! Don't forget to reply to other peoples' comments or questions.

  1. Helaman 6:20 is a good scripture about heart, freedom, and bondage.

    1. 30 "And behold, it is he who is the author of all sin. And behold, he doth carry on his works of darkness and secret murder, and doth hand down their plots, and their oaths, and their covenants, and their plans of awful wickedness, from generation to generation according as he can get hold upon the hearts of the children of men."
I love that this talks about how he tries to get hold upon our hearts. Freedom and bondage are probably all about who we let get hold upon our hearts.

  4. To always put others first in our lives, one of the things in the book that made me think was as they where freeing a man from jail at least one man died and maybe some others and I thought was it really worth it to have some people die and to free one person? But it was their choice to do that for him, and make him happy.

    1. That is always a great thing to learn, and, when we have our heart in the right place we can put God and then others first. Thanks for sharing!!!

    2. Interesting point! People often die for a cause - and you have to wonder if a "cause" is worth a human life - I suppose that since we are eternal beings - dying for the sake of others is a good step into the next life right? :-)

  5. Oh my goodness! This blog is so cool!! :D

Learning about Harriet Tubman and the people who helped with the underground railroad has taught me alot about how to punch fear in the face. They had so much faith and courage and passion! I think the Lord definiatly strengthened them in their pursuit of freedom.
Their hearts were devoted to the cause of what was morally right and that was so inpiring to me. It all makes me want to make sure my actions reflect my faith which will lead to true freedom.

    1. I agree! She had so much courage and faith - she should have been caught so many times, but was protected. It gives me courage to know that I can move forward in faith to whatever task the Lord gives me and He will make sure I can carry it out.

  6. Learning about Harriet Tubman helped me a lot to sort of ponder my own mission in life. It's helped me to try helping more people, and not just thinking about myself all of the time! I think that everyone's personal mission has something to do with helping someone else. We are all united children of God, and everyone's mission has something to do with helping another child of God, I believe! Whether it's helping others "get out of slavery", or bringing them towards Christ, or however you are personally blessed with certain gifts to help others.

Well, my personal definition of heart was our soul, or the place where all of our emotions and feelings are. People can't necessarily "make" us feel something, but by doing certain things to us, it kind of makes us not be able to control our personal feelings and emotions anymore. I'm not sure how many of you read "Uncle Tom's Cabin", but there were these 2 slaves toward the end named Sambo and Quimbo. They had pretty much been controlled by this bad man who was their slave owner. They were sort of "promoted" to be overseers by this man, and after being controlled by a man who treated them terribly, that's all they knew they could do whilst overseeing these other slaves. Everyone does have their own freedom of choice, but sometimes in situations like that, it sort of just takes away your willpower. You've never learned anything else, and it just happens. I do have a question, though, if anyone wants to help me with it: Would those kinds of people be punished for being that way, or would someone else be punished for teaching them that only?

    2. Wow. That is all I can say! Great job! I love your thoughts on the first question!

P.S. Trust me, it wasn't that late :)

    3. That is a great question. I think it is probably some of both maybe. Heavenly Father knows how accountable we were with the knowledge we had and how much choice we had under the circumstances. That is my thoughts about it anyway.

I love what you said about personal missions, I am writing it in my reflection journal.

  7. When i make my actions the same as my heart it is so much easier to follow the spirit and then with the spirit i can do anything as long as i trust in him and the Lord!

  8. Anthony says: What I learned from the book is that when you're serving others, miracles happen, and that Heavenly Father will always help you when you need it.

Megan says: What I learned is that doing the right thing isn't always easy, but that if you're on the side that's right you'll get blessings when you most need them.

    1. Wow - I guess it is true that miracles happen when you are serving others. People ask to see miracles, but really you're only going to see them if you are about your Father's business blessing others.

It goes along with Megan's comment about getting blessings when you most need them - so true!

      Great thoughts!

  9. (This is Miriam) Reading about Harriet Tubman made me feel like everybody has a part in life you just need to find it! And if you try hard enough you could become as popular and special as Harriet Tubman!

Even though heavenly father likes us just the way we are he sent us down to earth so we could become like him and improve!

Harriet Tubman is just a good person and thought to motivate us!!!!
