This blog is to help us ponder truth as we share our insights and inspirements throughout the week.
Each week will start with a question. You are asked to ponder it, discuss it with your family, and seek evidence for the answer in any of your studies that week. Post your inspirements too!

Focus Word Study
Questions:
What are the right things to focus on and how do I stay focused on them?
Pick a strategy of defense to focus on this week...
How did it help you? How else can focus be used to defend yourself from the adversary?
And Please share any other questions or thoughts you had as you studied this week.
You can comment below, or if you have an inspirement you can share online (a video you make from your ah-ha, a poem, a paper, a prezi, a song, etc), start a new post so we can comment on your inspirement. Remember to reply to other people's comments so we can answer each others' questions and discuss our different thoughts.
I hope that a lot of our questions in class can come from the discussions/questions posted here.

I read Focus and Priorities this morning and I have a question about it.
ReplyDeleteAt the end, it says that our priorities should be 2 fold:
1) a - To understand our relationship to God and b - secure that relationship (through ordinances and keeping covenants)
2) a - To understand our relationship to our family members and b - secure those relationships (through ordinances and keeping covenants)
So - I know reading scriptures, praying, temple, journal etc helps me understand my relationship to God. And he tells me how to secure it. He also tell me how to secure my relationships to my family members - so my questions is, how do I understand my relationship to my family members?
Here's a graphic to illustrate what I mean:
Priorities:
-----------------------UNDERSTAND RELATIONSHIP----------SECURE RELATIONSHIP
TO GOD-------------------Scriptures, Prayer, etc----------Ordinances/Keeping Covenants
FAMILY MEMBERS---??????????????????-----------Ordinances/Keeping Covenants
Any ideas?
For family members it is also through scriptures and prayer, but its doing them together. And talking with your family trying to learn from them. One of the commandments says to honor thy father and thy mother, so through keeping the commandments we are understanding our family relationships.
ReplyDeleteI think after we have understood and secured our relationship with God that will lead us to do the same with family. :)
Understanding my relationship with my family has been big this year for me. I've learned that the way you treat them has a huge impact on understanding them. Sometimes you find yourself not treating the people closest to you very well. Your on your best manners when you're around people that you don't live with, but I've found out that having good manners and making a priority to treat your family members with the highest respect is essential if you want to be close to them. When they feel safe around you are the moments you learn the most from them, and they from you. :)
ReplyDelete"When they feel safe around you are the moments you learn the most from them, and they from you." I LOVE this. I will bring it up at dinner today with my family - I think it is so true and we need to work on it.
DeleteFor me this week, I'm trying to figure out where I need to focus myself in my studies. To do this, I'm dedicating my scripture study for the next week to education. Specifically on the kind of education God want me to have.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to figure that out too :P It's all about mission. Sometimes I feel like I'm wasting my time when I'm studying biology or math or something else that I don't feel will help me in my life (which it probably won't :D). But if I eliminated a lot of other distractions in my life, I'd have a lot more time to focus on educating myself on things that are important to God for me. I'm not saying that math and biology are necessarily unimportant to education, I just think that we could all benefit from eliminating distractions, because that would give us more time to focus on mission.
DeleteI look forward to hearing what you learned!
Deleteabout education and where to focus your studies I mean.
DeleteI sent a comment, but it doesn't seem to be showing up. The story of my life with technology. I can't remember exactly what I said, so hopefully, it'll somehow show up if anyone is supposed to see it. :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was searching the scriptures on focus, this scripture really stuck out to me from James 2:10:
ReplyDelete"For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all."
I think a lot of people really misunderstand what focus means. A lot of people think focus limits you, when in reality, it does the opposite. Focus doesn't limit you one or two subjects that you can study, it just helps you concentrate on those things at a certain point in time, allowing you to get more done in that specific area. It's very important not to only focus on one subject, but to focus on them all. You just have to do that one at a time. That's what focus is. People think multi-tasking helps them, but it's really just an excuse to feel productive while browsing Facebook or chatting or whatever. In reality, doing things one at a time makes you most productive.
My thoughts om focus: We need to focus on wonderful things and make sure our priorities are right because if we focus on good things we will be happier 'cause that's what we are centered on.

DeleteThat is so true and if we do the opposite focus on bad things we will start to feel bad
DeleteFocus means to be quite interested in something. It means to center your thoughts around a specific interest. For us, we need to always be focused on getting back to Christ and obeying his commandments. And by doing this, we CAN fulfill our life missions. The way to do this is by waking up everyday and say today's a new day! And I know what I have to do!
ReplyDeleteOne of my main thoughts on Focus and Distractions is by eliminating my distractions, (some good, some bad) I am able to focus better and let my distracting limits go. Focus helps us get rid of our limits, it sets us free from our distractions. Isaiah made a good point that many people think that by focusing, we are limiting our possibilities, but I think the exact opposite is true. By distracting ourselves with things that aren't as important, we are limiting the possibilities of focusing and learning what is really important, things that can change our lives for the better. Just something to think about... :)
ReplyDeleteWhat I learned about focus in my study's this week was like a camera lens we need to take the light around us and focus it to us, kind of like what I am doing right now :) I am taking my study's and putting some of what I learned on here. Also listening to uncle Toms cabin Eliza was focused on getting her son free and God helped her because she was focused on the right, we need to focus on the right.
ReplyDeleteFocus is something I have a REALLY hard time with! All the time! I have been getting a lot better as I go on, though! I think Vanguard has helped me to focus a lot more on studying, and on my family and Heavenly Father, too, because I think they all go hand-in-hand, if we study the correct things!
ReplyDeleteI got this quote from the talk that I really liked: "...our biggest need is a clearer focus on how we should value and use what we already have."
I think this is seriously a need! I agree with him whole-heartedly!!!
This week I'm reading "Growing Up Duggar" by the Duggar family older girls, so for my Inspirement, I'm doing something one of them suggested in a book. I don't get along amazingly with my little sister, so I'm going to give her a gift and tell her "I love you!" And then I'll see how our relationship improves! :)
My defintion of focus is something that you have to try and fail and try and fail at over and over cause otherwise how would you focus if there was nothing to focus on...for example I have made this new schedule and I dont like it cause it makes me get up earlier than i would like but its making me focus and get things done and if i fail i can always get back up again! Even though its hard i still try the next day and repent and try again!
